"Rock of Ages" review a.k.a Coolest musical ever
Last night was the third or fourth time i watched Rock of Ages.A friend was going to watch it so i thought i'll watch it with her!
Ahhh...Even the trailer gives me goosebumps....The truth is that when you hear it's a musical you're kinda sceptical.Musicals tend to be boring and slightly lame(sometimes even a bit minty-Seth Cohen,The O.C reference :P ).But in this one that's not the case and before you start judging it let me tell you that it doesn't even feel like a musical.Yes there is singing every few minutes but it fits with the plot and everything.
The movie is about a "small town" girl who moves to Hollywood to pursue her dream but ends up working as a waitress in a rock&roll club in Sunset Strip. She falls in love, she hangs out with rockstars, she follows her dreams. But what the movie really is, is a tribute to rock 'n' roll !!!A tribute to classic rock hits from the 80's.And if you loved this music chances are you're going to love this movie.
Let's start with the cast. The protagonists are Julianne Hough(Footlose,Dancing with the Stars,Safe Haven) and Diego Boneta(Pretty Little Liars). And if these names say nothing to you just wait...We also have: Russell Brand, Alec Baldwin, Malin Akerman, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Bryan Cranston, Paul Giamatti, Mary J.Blige and of course Tom Cruise.
Now to the soundtrack...I was just going to mention a couple songs but i wouldn't do the movie any justice so here is the full list.
"Paradise City", "Sister Christian/Just Like Paradise/Nothin' but a Good Time", "Juke Box Hero/I Love Rock 'n' Roll" , "Hit Me with Your Best Shot" , "Waiting for a Girl (Boy) Like You", "More Than Words/Heaven", "Wanted Dead or Alive" , "I Want to Know What Love Is", "I Wanna Rock" , "Pour Some Sugar on Me" , "Harden My Heart" , "Shadows of the Night/Harden My Heart" , "Here I Go Again" , "Can't Fight This Feeling", "Any Way You Want It", "Undercover Lover" , "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" , "Rock You Like a Hurricane", "We Built This City/We're Not Gonna Take It", "Don't Stop Believin". (All these songs are performed by the cast.)
"I Remember You", "Everybody Wants Some!!", "Rock of Ages", "Bringin' on the Heartbreak", "Talk Dirty to Me", "No One Like You", "Cum on Feel the Noize", "Cherry Pie".(From original artists).
Like i said before the cast is actually singing all these songs. And from people like Julianne and Diego you kinda expect it(they're both also singers) but when you hear Tom Cruise singing the way he does you kinda lose it.Is there anything this man can't do?
To be honest i never was a big Tom Cruise fan.All his movies looked the same to me and every role he took was like the one before. He's always the tough, sexy guy who knows how to shoot a gun and climb buildings. In this one though he is a burned out rockstar who kinda walks and moves like Jack Sparrow on one hand and rocks the stage like no other,in the other.Seriously i think he was AMAZING in this role. There's no way you watch this movie and don't recognise his awesomeness and hard work.Disturbingly sexy and his voice is surprisingly good and to be honest i like the movie version of some of the songs a lot more than the original(Pour some sugar on me,Wanted dead or alive etc-and these are performed by him).He made Stacee Jaxx come to life in a super convincing way.Amazing performance and keep in mind the man is in his fifties but still, he makes you develop a super crush on Stacee(and on him a little bit too :P ).
The rest of the cast is also great.Julianne is so talented. Her voice might be a little squeaky and whiny but her whole performance with dancing, etc makes up for it.Plus she's very pretty to watch.Diego might be a fresh face but he has a really good voice and portrays the character of Drew really well.Everybody else is hilarious and eccentric in an over the top way but i think it works somehow.
I love this movie so much.I love the acting in it, i love the soundtrack, i love the musical part of it,i love it's comedy and romance.I love how they incorporated every song to the plot and how each scene looks like a videoclip.Granted this movie is not for everyone. If you hate musicals or this kind of music you're probably gonna get bored and hate the movie too.But that's ok.If you're an 80's or 90's kid though, if you love classic rock songs or some of the cast, chances are you're gonna enjoy this and have an amazing time(personally i'm always singing along and jumping on my chair).
So, if you want a really fun movie that's going to bring a smile on your face, grab your friends and get ready for a crazy, musical, over the top journey....oh...and...
Rock 'n' Roll.
I would give it: 9/10 rockstar guitars.
